Venus Williams withdrew from the Australian Open on Monday, prolonging her absence from the tennis tour because of an autoimmune disease that can cause fatigue and joint pain.
German player Andrea Petkovic has withdrawn from the Australian Open with a stress fracture in her lower back.
Petkovic, the 10th seed, said in a statement from the Women's Tennis Association, that she had been having back problems for two or three months.
